2025/5/19 to 22, the “Food Security, Combating Hunger, and Rural Development: 2nd Brazil–Africa Dialogue” was held in Brasília, Brazil’s capital, and Brazilian officials and representatives from 42 African countries and 9 international organizations gathered. In 2024/11, as the G20 presidency, Brazil launched the “Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty“, and this dialogue also explored expanding African countries’ engagement with this initiative.
The conference and field visits showcased Brazil’s agricultural and rural development models across a wide range of areas: in addition to genetic improvement technologies for crops and livestock being advanced by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), water resource management technologies, support for family farming, aquaculture, food supply systems, initiatives by local cooperatives, financing, and sustainability. Many of these can be adapted to local conditions in Africa, raising expectations for future technology transfer and strengthened cooperation.
From the 16th to the 19th centuries, many enslaved people were brought to Brazil from Africa. Referring to this background, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that “Brazil has a historical debt to Africa,” and stated that he prioritizes repaying it not with money but through technical cooperation, solidarity, and support for agriculture. Promoting the exchange of knowledge and technology among Global South countries such as Brazil and Africa is known as “South–South cooperation.” Géraldine Mukeshimana, Vice President of the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which provides investment and technical assistance to eradicate poverty and hunger in rural areas, said that this South–South cooperation is the key to rural transformation and emphasized the importance of sharing practical technologies.
