What Is the Watchdog Watching — Japan’s International Reporting and the Future of Journalism —

Global News View (GNV) is a project launched in a research lab at Osaka University, driven by the belief that getting more people to learn about global issues and challenges is the first step toward solving them. To date, we have published over 400 articles offering explanations of world affairs and analyses of international reporting.

Through research on recent reporting trends, GNV is concerned that the media’s function as a “watchdog” supporting the foundations of civil society and democracy may be disappearing. What are the media, which should speak out against injustices and problems involving power and wealth, looking at, where are they headed, and how can we ensure the maturation of democracy and the independence of the media?

We will hold GNV’s first public event: a panel discussion themed “What Is the Watchdog Watching — Japan’s International Reporting and the Future of Journalism —”.

Through discussions with Professor Virgil Hawkins, who conducts research at Osaka University focusing on media and international relations; Mr. Keishi Hashimoto, an International Cooperation Specialist at the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) who has led media projects around the world; and other journalists, we will consider the current state and future prospects of Japan’s international reporting.

Anyone interested in media, international relations, and related fields is welcome to join. Please feel free to register.

What Is the Watchdog Watching? -World Media Coverage in Japan and the Future of Journalism-

Global News View (GNV) is a project launched by a research group at Osaka University with the objective of helping more people learn about global issues, which is the first step toward resolving them. To date, we have provided commentary on world affairs and analysis of international news coverage in over 400 articles.

As part of our research, we focus on media’s role as watchdog to support the foundations of civil society and democracy. Our work highlighted a progressive withdrawal from this function for a variety of news and media outlets. What do the media, which essentially speak out against injustices and problems of power and wealth, see and what will happen in the future, and how can we ensure the strengthening of democracy and the independence of the media?* The event is conducted in Japanese with English translation.
