The Hague Group Announces Sanctions and Legal Action Against Israel

2025 year7 month16 day, at an emergency summit held in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia,30 countries participated, at which sanctions and legal measures against Israel were announced. This meeting was convened by the intergovernmental coalition “The Hague Group,” which coordinates among Latin American and African countries, among others, to pursue accountability for Israel’s violations of international law, and was co-hosted by the Colombian and South African governments. Specifically, the measures include banning the provision and transport of arms and military-related materials to Israel, reviewing public contracts, conducting independent investigations and prosecutions for violations of international law, and ensuring legal remedies for victims of international crimes,6 concrete measures are included, and12 countries pledged to implement them. At the same time, signaling that they would not tolerate international law being treated as optional and disregarded with impunity,30 participating countries unanimously decided to call for an immediate ceasefire and the fair application of international law.

In Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip,2023 year10 month onward, at least59,000 people Palestinians have been killed, and almost the entire population has been forced to flee. As a result, the Palestinian territories are largely uninhabitable, with about2.1 million people facing food insecurity. In response to Israel’s offensive, South Africa2023 year12 month, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) alleging that Israel’s military actions in Gaza constitute genocide, and primarily from Latin America and the African continent,14 countries have announced their intention to join the case and have strengthened the intervention. These Global South countries, working together and increasing diplomatic and legal pressure, are undertaking a new attempt at international accountability through organizations other than the UN.
