On 9/10/2025, the Israeli military attacked a media facility in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen. The attack killed 31 members of the press, including journalists. More than 100 others were injured.

The facility that was struck housed the offices of two newspapers of Ansar Allah (also known as the Houthis), the de facto government that controls most of Yemen’s territory. These papers are weeklies, and at the time of the strike, more staff than usual had gathered for their once-a-week printing. Following the attack, the 2 newspapers jointly issued a statement condemning Israel.

Ansar Allah has been launching drones and missiles at Israel proper since 2023, and the capital Tel Aviv has also come under attack. In turn, Israel has retaliated toward Yemen, striking airports, power plants, and other targets, and the confrontation between the two has continued.

According to the U.S.-based nonprofit Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an attack on journalists like this one is the second deadliest on record. The deadliest was the Maguindanao massacre in the Philippines in 2009. In that massacre, candidates and journalists traveling by car to register for a local election were ambushed by a rival camp. 58 people were killed, including 32 journalists.

Meanwhile, in Gaza, since 2023 at least 235 journalists have lost their lives due to Israeli attacks. This death toll is higher than in any previous conflict.
