May 3 is designated as “World Press Freedom Day.” On this day, which serves as a reminder of the importance of press freedom, the reality that this freedom is being threatened in multiple ways around the world is once again being brought into sharp relief. In April 2026, a journalist reporting in southern Lebanon was killed in an Israeli airstrike, and there is suspicion that the journalist was targeted precisely because of their profession.

These cases are not isolated incidents. In conflicts in the Middle East, killings of reporters have sharply increased, and the situation is especially dire in the Gaza Strip. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), in 2025 alone, 129 journalists and media workers were killed worldwide, the highest number on record. Of these, about two-thirds are attributed to Israeli attacks, showing how conflict is having a major impact on the safety of reporting. In addition, since the outbreak of the conflict in 2023, around 259 media workers have been killed, most of them journalists working in Gaza.

Another major problem is that many of these killings have not been followed by adequate investigations or accountability. CPJ points out that while targeted killings are on the rise, cases in which perpetrators are punished remain extremely rare, and that a “culture of impunity” is fueling violence, according to their findings.

Furthermore, threats to press freedom are not limited to times of war. In the 2026 World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), conditions worsened in 100 out of 180 countries, with political pressure and economic fragility becoming more widespread. Over the past year, government controls on the media, detention and deportation of journalists, and the forced closure of news outlets have also increased one after another over this period.

In addition, particular attention is being paid to the impact of the rapid spread of artificial intelligence (AI). Advances in generative AI have made it easier to create and disseminate disinformation and deepfakes, undermining the reliability of information. Even over the past year, there have been reports of AI-generated content being used in information warfare surrounding elections and international affairs, and situations in which the credibility of news organizations themselves is called into question are becoming more common.

The influence of platform companies that operate social media and search engines is also expanding. As algorithms shape the visibility and reach of information, there is a growing tendency for which news reaches people to depend on corporate decisions, according to observers. There are also concerns that this could harm the diversity and independence of the press.

This series of developments is directly connected to the “right to know,” a cornerstone of democracy. Press freedom is not just a right of those who work in the media; it is also a prerequisite for citizens to access diverse and trustworthy information and to participate in social decision-making. World Press Freedom Day is an opportunity for us to reaffirm its importance amid a changing information landscape, and to once again reflect on the need to protect the independence and safety of journalism.
