A new antibiotic has been developed in India. For the past 30 years, no new antibiotics have been developed worldwide, and the antibiotic developed in India this time targets community-acquired pneumonia that is resistant to conventional antibiotics. India is among the countries most affected by antibiotic-resistant bacteria (superbugs), and nearly 60,000 newborns lose their lives to drug-resistant bacteria each year.
The world’s first antibiotic effective against bacterial infections was developed in 1910. Meanwhile, the dangers of overuse have continued to be pointed out by experts since around the 1940s. As a result of the global overuse of antibiotics, drug-resistant bacteria have emerged, and 700,000 people die each year. If this continues, that number is projected to rise to 10 million by 2050. Many pharmaceutical companies have not pursued antibiotic development over the past several decades due to low profitability, and we hope this new drug can change that trend.
