A Forum on the Crisis in Journalism: Proposal-Based Workshop Series

Session 3: Collaboration to Protect and Expand International Reporting

Toward practical solutions: Through the past two workshops (Session 1 “What Does the Watchdog See: Japan’s International Reporting and the Future of Journalism” and Session 2 “Considering the Crisis in Journalism: What Is ‘Neutrality’ in US Media”), we confirmed the need not only to share problems but also to explore remedies. Against this backdrop, we will hold the third workshop as a venue where people with diverse backgrounds who are interested in media and journalism can gather to consider practical improvements together.

Session 3: Collaboration to Protect and Expand International Reporting

International reporting in Japan is limited in volume and heavily skewed geographically, with a small number of foreign correspondents covering vast regions with limited resources (personnel). If resources decline further, this situation could deteriorate even more. This proposal explores ways to enable more efficient and multi-faceted international reporting by having news organizations share resources, coordinate the placement of bureaus, and share reporting information. While the session will focus primarily on examples from Africa, the proposal itself is not confined to any specific region.

Presenter: Virgil Hawkins (Osaka School of International Public Policy, Osaka University)

What is this series?

This series is a workshop-style event aimed at bringing together media practitioners, researchers, students, and members of the public to address the worsening crisis in journalism in Japan, using one concrete proposal per session as a focal point for exploring paths to improvement. In each session, starting from the proposal presented, participants will discuss and examine its feasibility and challenges from multiple angles, and consider practical ways forward for journalism. Information on Session 4 and beyond will be announced separately.
